Robotics in Practice PDF
By:Joseph F. Engelberger
Published on 2012-12-06 by Springer Science & Business Media

THE REAL THING by Isaac Asimov Back in 1939, when I was still a teenager, I began to write (and publish) a series of stories about robots which, for the first time in science fiction, were pictured as having been deliberately engineered to do their job safely. They were not intended to be creaky Gothic menaces, nor outlets for mawkish sentiment. They were simply well-designed machines. Beginning in 1942, I crystallized this notion in what I called 'The Three Laws of Robotics' and, in 1950, nine of my robot stories were collected into a book, I, Robot. I did not at that time seriously believe that I would live to see robots in action and robotics becoming a booming industry .... Yet here we are, better yet, I am alive to see it. But then, why shouldn't they be with us? Robots fulfil an important role in industry. They do simple and repetitive jobs more steadily, more reliably, and more uncomplainingly than a human being could - or should. Does a robot displace a human being? Certainly, but he does so at a job that, simply because a robot can do it, is beneath the dignity of a human being; a job that is no more than mindless drudgery. Better and more human jobs can be found for human beings - and should.

The Big Nine PDF
By:Amy Webb
Published on 2019-03-05 by Hachette UK

A call-to-arms about the broken nature of artificial intelligence, and the powerful corporations that are turning the human-machine relationship on its head. We like to think that we are in control of the future of |artificial| intelligence. The reality, though, is that we--the everyday people whose data powers AI--aren't actually in control of anything. When, for example, we speak with Alexa, we contribute that data to a system we can't see and have no input into--one largely free from regulation or oversight. The big nine corporations--Amazon, Google, Facebook, Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba, Microsoft, IBM and Apple--are the new gods of AI and are short-changing our futures to reap immediate financial gain. In this book, Amy Webb reveals the pervasive, invisible ways in which the foundations of AI--the people working on the system, their motivations, the technology itself--is broken. Within our lifetimes, AI will, by design, begin to behave unpredictably, thinking and acting in ways which defy human logic. The big nine corporations may be inadvertently building and enabling vast arrays of intelligent systems that don't share our motivations, desires, or hopes for the future of humanity. Much more than a passionate, human-centered call-to-arms, this book delivers a strategy for changing course, and provides a path for liberating us from algorithmic decision-makers and powerful corporations.

Probabilistic Methods In The Theory Of Structures: Strength Of Materials, Random Vibrations, And Random Buckling PDF Download

Probabilistic Methods In The Theory Of Structures: Strength Of Materials, Random Vibrations, And Random Buckling PDF
By:Elishakoff Isaac E
Published on 2017-03-23 by World Scientific

The first edition of this book appeared over three decades ago (Wiley-Interscience, 1983), whereas the second one saw light on the verge of new millennium (Dover, 1999). This is third, corrected and expanded edition that appears in conjunction with its companion volume Probabilistic Methods in the Theory of Structures: Complete Worked-Through Solutions. Thus, the reader is able to both get acquainted with the theoretical material and be able to master some of the problems, following Chinese dictum: I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand — Confucius. The main idea of the book lies in the fact that three topics: probabilistic strength of materials, random vibrations, and probabilistic buckling are presented in a single package allowing one to see the forest in between the trees. Indeed, these three topics usually are presented in separate manners, in different specialized books. Here, the reader gets a feeling of true unity of the subject at large in order to appreciate that in the end what one wants is reliability of the structure, in conjunction with its operating conditions. As the author describes in the Preface of the second edition, this book was not conceived ab initio, as a book that author strived to compose. Rather, it was forced, as it were, upon me due to two reasons. One was rather a surprising but understandable requirement in the venerable Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands to prepare the lecture notes for students with the view of reducing skyrocketing costs of acquisition of textbooks by the students. The other one was an unusually warm acceptance of the notes that the author prepared while at Delft University of Technology and later in Haifa, at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology by the legendary engineering scientist Warner Tjardus Koiter (1914–1997). The energy necessary to prepare the second and third editions came from enthusiastic reviews that appeared in various sources. Author embraced the simplicity of exposition as the main virtue following Isaac Newton's view that |Truth is ever to be found in simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.|

Automotive Master Technician PDF
By:Graham Stoakes
Published on 2015-02-01 by

'Technology needs technicians, and the ability to harness technical diagnosis calls for a Master Technician'. The rapid growth in technology used in the production of cars has highlighted the need for a different approach to vehicle diagnosis and repair. The integration of complex electronic control with mechanical systems shows the brilliance in the engineering capabilities of designers and manufacturers. While this technology has improved the comfort, safety, convenience and reliability of vehicles, it has also created an issue with established methods of maintenance and repair. As many of the control systems operate beyond our natural capabilities, diagnostic tooling is required to undertake most of the fault finding duties traditionally conducted by vehicle technicians. Also, the sophisticated nature of advanced system faults will often lead to diagnostic requirements for which there is no prescribed method. One of the fundamental roles of a Master Technician will be the diagnosis and repair of these complex and advanced system faults, for which diagnostic approaches need to be developed that can provide logical strategies to reduce overall diagnostic time. An effective diagnostic routine should always begin with a logical assessment of symptoms and then uses reasoning to reduce the possible number of options, before following a systematic approach to finding and fixing the root cause. The chapters will introduce you to health and safety, electrical principles and the psychology of diagnosis, followed by technical chapters on the operation of advanced vehicle systems including: Advanced Internal Combustion Engine Technology Advanced Vehicle Driveline and Chassis Technology Advanced Vehicle Body Electrics Alternative Fuel Vehicles It will also include chapters on the non-technical skills required from a Master Technician including: Providing Technical Support and Advice to Colleagues in Motor Vehicle Environments Liaising with Vehicle Product Manufacturers and Suppliers on Technical Matters Diagnostic Consultations with Customers in Motor Vehicle Environments Fundamental Management Principles in the Automotive Industry This book offers: Ideal support for learners and tutors undertaking automotive qualifications. Information to help cover the knowledge requirements for Level 4 Master Technicians. A large number of illustrations to support knowledge and understanding.

Surviving Supply Chain Integration PDF
By:National Research Council,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Board on Manufacturing and Engineering Design,Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems,Committee on Supply Chain Integration
Published on 2000-03-23 by National Academies Press

The managed flow of goods and information from raw material to final sale also known as a |supply chain| affects everything--from the U.S. gross domestic product to where you can buy your jeans. The nature of a company's supply chain has a significant effect on its success or failure--as in the success of Dell Computer's make-to-order system and the failure of General Motor's vertical integration during the 1998 United Auto Workers strike. Supply Chain Integration looks at this crucial component of business at a time when product design, manufacture, and delivery are changing radically and globally. This book explores the benefits of continuously improving the relationship between the firm, its suppliers, and its customers to ensure the highest added value. This book identifies the state-of-the-art developments that contribute to the success of vertical tiers of suppliers and relates these developments to the capabilities that small and medium-sized manufacturers must have to be viable participants in this system. Strategies for attaining these capabilities through manufacturing extension centers and other technical assistance providers at the national, state, and local level are suggested. This book identifies action steps for small and medium-sized manufacturers--the |seed corn| of business start-up and development--to improve supply chain management. The book examines supply chain models from consultant firms, universities, manufacturers, and associations. Topics include the roles of suppliers and other supply chain participants, the rise of outsourcing, the importance of information management, the natural tension between buyer and seller, sources of assistance to small and medium-sized firms, and a host of other issues. Supply Chain Integration will be of interest to industry policymakers, economists, researchers, business leaders, and forward-thinking executives.

A rigorously researched and definitive book - the first major re-appraisal of artist engineer Ettore Bugatti and his extraordinary cars to appear since 1963. He built only 7,800 cars between 1910 and 1939, but these are much sought-after today. This book charts the beginnings of the famous marque, the cars that brought it fame from the exquisite Type 35 to the massive Royale, only six of which were ever built, and chronicles the make's revival which began in Italy in 1988. Comprehensively illustrated with over 300 photographs, this book is a unique source of reference and winner of the Society of Automotive Historians' Cugnot Award.

Vehicle Feedback and Driver Situation Awareness PDF

A potentially troubling aspect of modern vehicle design – some would argue - is a trend towards isolating the driver and reducing vehicle feedback, usually in the name of comfort and refinement but increasingly because of automation. There can be little doubt cars have become more civilised over the years yet, despite this, the consequences on driver behaviour remain to a large extent anecdotal. Readers of this book will have heard such anecdotes for themselves. They usually take the form of drivers of a certain age recalling their first cars from the 1970’s or 80’s, in which |doing 70mph really felt like it|. The question is whether such anecdotes actually reflect a bigger, more significant issue that could be better understood? Related questions have been explored in other domains such as aviation, where the change to ‘fly-by-wire’, for example, did indeed bring about some occasionally serious performance issues which were not anticipated. Despite some clear parallels automotive systems have been left relatively unexamined. The research described in this monograph aims to explore precisely these issues from a Human Factors perspective.
